Coquitlam Sign Bylaws & Permits: A Simple Guide for Business Owners

If you own a business in Coquitlam, you need to follow the City’s rules around signs. The Sign Bylaw sets out what types of signs are allowed, where they can go, and what permits are needed.

This guide explains the basics in plain language and links to the City’s official documents. If you’re planning a new sign, save yourself time and risk — read this first.

Why the Coquitlam Sign Bylaw Matters

The bylaw helps keep the city safe, organized, and professional. It controls:

  • Where signs can be placed
  • How big and tall they can be
  • Which types of signs are not allowed (like roof signs, billboards, or flashing signs)
  • When a permit is required

Signs That Need a Permit

In Coquitlam, most permanent business signs require a permit. This includes:

  • Fascia signs (mounted on a wall)
  • Freestanding and monument signs
  • Canopy or awning signs
  • Projecting signs

Some small exceptions exist — like temporary real estate signs or certain plaques — but if you’re planning a permanent or illuminated sign, assume you’ll need approval first.

How Much Do Sign Permits Cost?

The City charges fees based on the type of sign and its value. According to the Sign Permit Fee Schedule:

  • Time-limited sign permit: $115.90
  • Standard sign permits: range from $115.90 to $410.00 depending on project value
  • Construction hoarding signs: $127.70
  • Signs that need Council approval: $1,921.10

⚠️ Note: These are the City’s published fees (2025) and may change. Always check the most recent fee schedule before you apply.

What You Need Before You Apply

The City requires a full submission package before reviewing your permit. According to the submission checklist, you’ll need:

  • -A completed application form, signed by the property owner or business
  • –Business licence numbers for both the tenant and the sign contractor
  • -A site plan showing property lines, buildings, landscaping, and existing signs
  • –Photos of the building and surrounding area
  • –Sign details including dimensions, colours, lettering, wording, and materials
  • –Building drawings showing placement of the new sign
  • –Engineering drawings (with a BC engineer’s stamp) if the sign is large or complex
  • Lighting details if the sign is illuminated

What Happens if You Skip the Rules

If you install a sign without approval, the City can:

  • Order you to remove it immediately
  • Remove it themselves and bill you for the costs
  • Fine you up to $10,000

These penalties make it important to handle the process properly.
